Get your free estimateTrane Heat Pump Service: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
Most Trane heat pump service calls in Pasadena run between $150 and $650 installed, depending on which component failed. We keep common Trane replacement parts on our trucks and can typically get a Pasadena homeowner back up and running the same day we diagnose the problem. The part number matters less than the system match, so we verify your outdoor unit’s model and serial plate before we quote anything.
Here’s how most Trane owners in Pasadena discover something’s wrong: the system runs but won’t cool, or it short-cycles, or the outdoor unit makes a sound like a garbage disposal chewing on a fork. Sometimes it’s a slow decline, a unit that just doesn’t hold temperature the way it did last August. Other times it’s sudden: a dead compressor, a blown reversing valve, a control board that gave up overnight. Either way, you need a technician who knows Trane wiring, Trane refrigerant specs, and Trane’s habit of changing part numbers between model years. That’s the call you make to us.
Which Trane Models This Applies To
We service the full Trane heat pump line we see across Pasadena homes: XR, XL, XV, and the newer XV18 and XV20i variable-speed units, plus older XB and XLh series systems that are still running in plenty of Pasadena neighborhoods like Bungalow Heaven and Linda Vista. Trane parts compatibility is where the real tricky part lives. A defrost control board from a 2016 XR14 will not always drop into a 2021 XR14 because Trane revised the board mid-production and changed the connector layout. We match by serial number, not just model number. That’s the difference between a part that works for a season and one that works like the original.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for controls, sensors, and reversing valves, we install genuine Trane parts or OEM-spec equivalents from suppliers we have vetted over years of Pasadena service. For contactors and capacitors, we stock quality aftermarket brands that meet or exceed the original Trane spec, because those are commodity parts and paying Trane’s sticker price for the same guts in a different box doesn’t serve the customer. The honest answer is it depends on the part, and we tell you which bucket your part falls into before you spend a dollar.
One thing to know up front: Dalton Heating & Air Pasadena is an independent service provider. We are not a Trane dealer or factory affiliate. We service Trane because we know the equipment, and we also stock parts for Carrier and Lennox systems, but nobody here is a Trane factory employee, and we do not pretend to be.

Signs Your Trane Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- The outdoor unit runs but the air from your vents is lukewarm. This usually points to a reversing valve that is stuck halfway between heating and cooling mode, or a compressor that is running but not pumping to full pressure. A stuck reversing valve on a Trane can also cause the unit to heat when you set it to cool.
- The system short-cycles, turning on and off every few minutes. On Trane heat pumps, this is often a failing start capacitor or a low-pressure switch tripping because of a refrigerant leak. Short-cycling beats up the compressor, and the compressor is the most expensive part on the unit.
- The outdoor unit is covered in frost or ice in mild Pasadena weather. A heat pump will frost lightly in winter and run a defrost cycle to clear it. If it is still iced over at noon on a 60-degree day, the defrost control board or the defrost sensor has failed, and the unit is working against itself.
- You hear a loud buzzing or clicking from the outdoor cabinet, then nothing. That is the contactor trying to pull in and failing, or a compressor that is locked up and tripping its overload. Either one is a service call. A locked Trane compressor usually means the unit needs a hard start kit or a replacement compressor, and we will tell you straight which one.
- The thermostat says the system is on, but the outdoor unit never starts. This can be a failed run capacitor, a blown control fuse, or a dead transformer. We see this a lot in Pasadena homes with trees, because ants love to build nests inside outdoor unit contactors and short the circuit. That one I admit surprised me the first time I opened a panel and found a full ant colony where the contactor used to be.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Pasadena, most Trane heat pump repairs fall between $150 and $650 installed. A capacitor or contactor replacement usually lands at the lower end, $150 to $300. A defrost control board or fan motor runs $350 to $550 installed. A reversing valve or compressor is a bigger job that can push past the top of that range, and we quote those individually after we see the unit. Every quote includes the part, the labor, and the refrigerant if the job calls for it. No separate line-item surprises after we start.
Here is the structure we work under, and it applies to every Trane repair we do in Pasadena:
- Written price before any work starts. You see the number, you approve the number, and that is the number on the invoice. No revisions at the door.
- Written guarantee on every repair, good for a full year. If the same part fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That is the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it is not an upgrade you pay for.
- Free second visit if the repair does not hold. This is part of The Garrison Code that every Dalton Heating & Air location operates under, and has been since 2003.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check two things before you call. First, verify your thermostat is set correctly and the breakers for the heat pump are not tripped. Second, check your air filter. A clogged filter will cause a Trane heat pump to overheat and shut down, and I have fixed more “broken” heat pumps by changing a filter than I care to admit. Changing a filter takes three minutes and costs twelve dollars.
Past that, I would step back. The inside of a heat pump has high-voltage wiring, a capacitor that stores enough charge to knock you off a ladder even with power cut, and refrigerant under pressure that requires an EPA certification to handle. Opening the panel on your Trane outdoor unit is not like changing a light switch. If you have checked the breakers and the filter and the system still is not right, call us at (626) 657-5344. We are background-checked, uniformed technicians, and we show up inside the window we give you.
You get the price in writing before I touch anything. That’s not a policy, it’s just how this should work.
FAQs
A well-maintained Trane heat pump in Pasadena typically lasts 12 to 15 years, though we see units closer to the coast pushing 18. Pasadena’s summer heat load is real, and the harder a system works, the faster components wear. Regular tune-ups in the $80 to $200 range will stretch that lifespan more than any single repair ever will.
For capacitors, contactors, sensors, and control boards, the honest answer is no: these are sealed components, and once they fail, they get replaced. For things like fan motors, a rebuild is sometimes possible but rarely makes financial sense on a residential Trane unit when a new motor is $350 to $550 installed. Call us at (626) 657-5344 and we will tell you which side of that line your part falls on.
Most residential Trane heat pump repairs take under two hours once we are on site. We carry common Trane-compatible capacitors, contactors, sensors, and control boards on the truck, so we can often fix the unit on the first visit. If your part is not on the truck, we order it and typically return within one to three business days.
Yes. We stock the Trane repair parts that fail most often in Pasadena’s climate on our service trucks, and we have supply relationships that get less-common parts to us fast. We also stock select parts for Carrier and Lennox systems, so if you have a mixed-brand house, we can handle it in one visit.
