Rheem thermostat installation in Pasadena typically runs $180 – $340 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing a standard programmable unit or moving up to a smart thermostat with Wi-Fi. We stock Rheem-compatible thermostats on our trucks and can usually complete the swap same-day when you call before noon. Most homeowners discover the thermostat has failed when the system runs constantly without hitting the set temperature, or when the display goes blank and the Rheem furnace or heat pump simply won’t respond to any input.
Which Rheem Models This Applies To
We install and calibrate thermostats across every Rheem residential line we see in Pasadena, including the Classic, Prestige, and Endeavor series for gas furnaces, heat pumps, and split AC systems. The compatibility question that matters isn’t just brand, it’s the voltage and staging. Rheem single-stage systems need a simple low-voltage thermostat, but multi-stage Rheem heat pumps and variable-speed air handlers require a thermostat that can actually drive those stages. If the wrong thermostat is hung on a two-stage Rheem system, the second stage never fires and the homeowner gets poor comfort without knowing why.
When we open a failed thermostat, the model label tells us most of what we need. But the real check is at the equipment side: we count the wires at the terminal block and verify the control board’s staging configuration before recommending a replacement. That five-minute check prevents a common Pasadena problem where an old two-wire setup gets a modern smart thermostat that needs a common wire, and the system behaves erratically until we run one. OEM Rheem thermostats are good, but Honeywell and Ecobee units built to Rheem specs are genuinely equal for most single-stage homes, and they often cost less. We’ll tell you which makes sense for your equipment, not just what’s on the shelf.

Signs Your Rheem Thermostat Installation Is Failing
- Blank or flickering display. The thermostat has lost power, which can be a dead battery, a failed transformer at the air handler, or a broken wire. If replacing batteries doesn’t fix it, the problem is usually not the thermostat itself, and it’ll need a meter to trace.
- System short-cycles or runs constantly. A failing temperature sensor reads the room wrong, so the thermostat thinks it’s 68 when it’s 75, or vice versa. The symptom is a Rheem system that never feels settled, and utility bills that creep upward.
- Temperature on the screen doesn’t match the room. A sensor that has drifted off calibration by four or five degrees is no longer controlling anything. The fix is a replacement, not calibration, because most Rheem sensors are sealed inside the thermostat.
- Buttons or touchscreen don’t respond. On Rheem digital thermostats, the membrane switches under the faceplate wear out, especially in a Pasadena kitchen or hallway where heat, humidity, and cooking residue accumulate faster than you’d expect.
- System won’t switch between heating and cooling. The reversing-valve relay or the mode switch has failed, so the thermostat won’t energize the right circuit. This is most common on Rheem heat pumps, and it often gets misdiagnosed as a compressor problem.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard Rheem-compatible programmable thermostat, installed, Pasadena homeowners pay $180 – $270. Smart thermostats with Wi-Fi, scheduling, and geofencing run $250 – $340 installed, including setup on your phone and the home network. If your system needs a common wire pulled or a staging upgrade, that adds $40 – $90 in labor, and we’ll tell you before we start, in writing.
The price we quote is the price you pay. It includes the thermostat or part, all labor, wiring checks at both ends, system testing in every mode, and programming. It also includes a written one-year guarantee on the repair under the Garrison Standard. If the thermostat or our work fails in that year, we return at no charge. That’s been the rule since 2003, and it applies to Rheem equipment we install in Pasadena, Altadena, and everywhere else we work.
DIY or Call Us?
Swapping a thermostat looks simple and sometimes is: kill the power, label the wires, move them over, restore power. But on Rheem heat pumps and multi-stage systems, the wiring gets unforgiving fast, and the danger is real. A low-voltage wire touched to the wrong terminal can fry the control board, and that’s a $250 – $600 mistake. A line-voltage thermostat on older Rheem electric furnaces carries actual line current, and that’s a shock hazard, not a DIY job.
What you can safely check is batteries, the circuit breaker at the panel, and whether the display responds. If those are fine and the system still won’t behave, call us at (626) 657-5344. We’ll show up with the right Rheem-compatible stock on the truck, quote the job in writing before any work starts, and stand behind it for a full year.
FAQs
Most Rheem thermostats last 8 – 12 years in Pasadena homes, though heat, dust, and constant switching between heat and cooling during shoulder months can shorten that. A thermostat older than ten years that’s giving you intermittent symptoms is usually a replacement call.
Sometimes. Loose wiring, corroded terminals, and failed batteries can be repaired on the spot. But a dead sensor, worn membrane buttons, or a failed control relay inside the thermostat itself means replacement, and rebuilding a sealed consumer thermostat usually costs more than a new unit.
Most Rheem thermostat installations take 45 – 90 minutes from arrival to cleanup. If we need to run a new common wire or upgrade staging at the control board, it can take up to two hours, and we’ll tell you before we start.
Yes. Our trucks carry Rheem-compatible programmable thermostats and smart thermostats, plus Honeywell and Ecobee units that match Rheem system specs. We also carry the wiring, terminal kits, and common-wire adapters needed for older Pasadena homes where the original thermostat wire doesn’t have enough conductors.
We do. Dalton Heating & Air Pasadena is factory-trained on nine major residential brands, including Rheem, Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York, Daikin, Bryant, and American Standard. Dalton Heating & Air is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with Rheem. You get the price in writing before Marco Benitez or any of our techs touch anything. That’s not a policy – it’s just how this should work.
