We stock and install Lennox-compatible heat pump parts across Pasadena, with most repairs running $150 – $650 depending on the component and your model. Same-day service is available when the part is on our truck, which covers the majority of common Lennox failures like capacitors, contactors, defrost boards, and refrigerant leaks. Most Pasadena homeowners discover a failing heat pump the hard way: the outdoor unit runs but the house doesn’t warm up in January, or the system freezes over on a mild December night and you hear the compressor trying to start every few minutes.
Lennox heat pumps are solid machines, but Pasadena’s climate puts real strain on them. We get heat waves in October and cold snaps in February, and every season change means the system cycles between heating and cooling more often than a heat pump in, say, Phoenix would. That switching is hard on reversing valves and defrost sensors specifically. Add in the ash and dust that drifts down from the San Gabriels, and coils in Pasadena need more attention than the factory maintenance schedule assumes.
Which Lennox Models This Applies To
Dalton Heating & Air Pasadena is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Lennox. We service the full residential Lennox heat pump lineup, from the entry-level Merit series (ML14XP1, ML16XP1) through the mid-tier Elite series (EL17XP1, EL18XPV, EL19XPV) and the premium Signature series (SL18XP1, SL25XPV, XP20, XP21, XP25). Each series uses different control boards and sensors, and the inverter-driven Signature models communicate over Lennox’s proprietary protocol. A generic aftermarket control board will not communicate correctly with an XP25. That’s the kind of thing a parts catalog won’t tell you but a technician who has actually swapped one will.
Identifying your model takes thirty seconds: look on the outdoor unit’s data plate, usually located on the back or side behind the access panel. You’ll see a model number starting with a series prefix like XP, EL18, or SL25. Write that down before you call anyone. If the plate is faded, which happens on Pasadena roofs and south-facing walls after a decade of sun, we can pull the model from the indoor air handler’s plate as well. On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for mechanical parts like capacitors, contactors, and fan motors, quality aftermarket equivalents from AmRad, Mars, and Genteq are fine and often cost 30 – 40% less than Lennox-branded boxes. For control boards, thermostats, and anything inverter-related, we recommend Lennox OEM every time. The aftermarket boards we’ve tested on Signature-series units have unacceptably high failure rates, and we’re not going to install a part we don’t trust for a full year.

Signs Your Lennox Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- Outdoor unit runs, no real heat or cooling from the vents. The compressor is likely running but the reversing valve may be stuck between positions, or you’ve lost refrigerant charge. Low refrigerant on a heat pump usually means a leak, and a leak needs to be found, not just topped off.
- System trips the breaker repeatedly. This points to a failing compressor, a grounded contactor, or a capacitor that’s pulling excessive current. Each trip stresses the compressor windings further, so don’t keep resetting it. One reset is a fluke; three is a pattern that needs a technician.
- Outdoor unit turns into a block of ice in winter. Some frosting is normal, but a full ice-up means the defrost cycle isn’t working. On Lennox units, that’s usually the defrost thermostat or control board. Left untreated, ice bends fan blades and starves the compressor of oil return.
- Clicking, humming, or a hard-start sound from the outdoor unit. That is the classic weak capacitor sound. The compressor tries to start, can’t overcome the load, and trips its internal overload. The fix is usually a $25 capacitor and fifteen minutes of labor, but if you ignore the clicking for a season, the compressor fails and that’s a $1,500 – $3,000 conversation.
- Heat pump blows warm air in cooling mode, or cool air when heating. The reversing valve is stuck or its solenoid coil has failed. This is one of the most common Pasadena failures because we flip between heating and cooling so often during spring and fall.

DIY or Call Us?
There are exactly two things a homeowner can safely check on a Lennox heat pump. First, is the thermostat set correctly and calling for heat or cool, with fresh batteries if it takes them? Second, is the outdoor unit’s disconnect box in the on position and the breaker not tripped? If those check out, stop there. Heat pumps contain high-voltage capacitors that hold a lethal charge even with power disconnected, and a heat pump’s refrigerant side runs at hundreds of PSI. Those are not beginner repairs. Watching a video does not prepare you for a capacitor that discharges into your hand. We’re happy to walk you through the safe checks over the phone, and if it’s beyond that, call (626) 657-5344 and we’ll send someone who does this every day.
FAQs
A properly maintained Lennox heat pump in Pasadena lasts 12 – 18 years on average. Inland areas with hotter summers tend to run compressors harder, and coastal homes see more salt corrosion. Our Pasadena customers with regular maintenance tend to hit the high end of that range.
In most cases, no. Capacitors, contactors, and sensors are sealed components not designed to be rebuilt. Replacing them is the repair. We’ll tell you plainly if a repair is worth doing versus putting that money toward a new system, and we’ll give you that assessment in writing.
A capacitor or contactor takes about 45 minutes from arrival to cleanup. A reversing valve or refrigerant leak repair takes 2 – 4 hours since it involves recovering refrigerant, brazing, pulling a vacuum, and recharging the system to spec.
Yes. We keep the most common Lennox parts stocked: capacitors, contactors, defrost thermostats, fan motors, and multi-family control boards. If we don’t have your exact part, our Pasadena area supplier network includes Lennox-specific distributors who can get us OEM parts same-day in most cases. We also maintain stock for Carrier and Trane units for the occasional mixed-brand household.
If your Lennox heat pump is down in Pasadena, call (626) 657-5344.
