We stock Lennox-compatible capacitors on our trucks and replace them same-day in most Pasadena neighborhoods, with installed prices typically running $150 – $450 depending on the capacitor’s spec and your condenser or air handler model. The price is written down before we touch anything, and the repair carries a full-year written guarantee through our 365-Day Done Right Promise. Most Pasadena homeowners discover a bad capacitor when the outside unit hums but the fan won’t spin, or the compressor clicks and shuts off after a few seconds.
A capacitor is the electrical component that gives your Lennox compressor and fan motor the starting jolt they need, then keeps them running smoothly. When it fails, your system either won’t start at all or draws too much current trying, which is how a $40 part turns into a $1,200 compressor if ignored. Lennox uses capacitors rated between 5 and 80 microfarads, usually dual-run units that serve both the fan and compressor from one canister. We carry the common Lennox ratings on the truck and can match the rest same-week.
Which Lennox Models This Applies To
Lennox runs capacitors across nearly every residential line: the Merit series (13ACX, 14ACX, ML14XC1), Elite (XC13, XC14, EL16XC1), and Dave Lennox Signature (XC21, XC25, SL18XC1). The capacitor itself sits inside the condenser’s electrical compartment behind a small panel on the side of the unit. If you open that panel (with the disconnect pulled, which we’ll get to), you’ll see a silver or black cylinder with a label listing its microfarad rating, voltage, and whether it’s a dual-run or single-run unit.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners hit: Lennox units shipped from the factory with capacitors rated at 370 or 440 volts, and swapping a 370 for a 440 is fine, but dropping from 440 to 370 will shorten the new part’s life dramatically. The microfarad rating must match within 5% of the original spec. A 45/5 dual-run capacitor means 45 microfarads for the compressor side and 5 for the fan, and substituting a 45/7.5 will over-speed the fan and burn the motor windings in a summer. We also see older Lennox units in Pasadena’s Bungalow Heaven and Madison Heights neighborhoods that still carry original single-run capacitors paired with a separate fan capacitor. If the person diagnosing your system only checks one of them, you’ll be calling again in August.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision: Lennox-branded capacitors are made for Lennox by the same Tier-1 suppliers (Aerovox, Genteq, AmRad) that sell under their own labels. We stock both. The honest answer is that a quality aftermarket capacitor from one of those three manufacturers performs identically to the Lennox-logoed version at roughly half the part cost. What matters is the rating tolerance, not the sticker on the side.

Signs Your Lennox Capacitor Replacement Is Failing
- Outside unit hums, but the fan doesn’t turn. The capacitor can’t deliver the starting torque, so the motor just sits there drawing locked-rotor current. This is the most common failure mode we see in Pasadena, especially after the first heat wave of the season.
- Compressor clicks on and off rapidly. That’s the compressor trying to start, failing, and tripping its thermal overload. It’ll keep trying every few minutes, which is hard on the windings. Each failed start cooks the motor a little more.
- Fan starts only if you spin it by hand. The capacitor’s start side is dead but the run side still functions. The motor will run once moving, but it’s pulling extra current the whole time and the capacitor will fully fail soon.
- Bulging top or leaking oil from the capacitor body. A capacitor that’s swelling has internal pressure from failed dielectric fluid, and it’s done. This one is visible from the outside panel once the disconnect is pulled.
- AC runs but trip breaker occasionally or the unit is unusually noisy at startup. A weak capacitor causes rough, high-current starts. The breaker may not trip every time, but the strain is registering somewhere.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Lennox capacitor replacement in Pasadena, expect $150 – $450 installed. Single-run capacitors on smaller Merit-series units land at the low end. Dual-run capacitors on Elite and Signature models with higher microfarad ratings, especially those requiring a 440-volt part, run toward the high end. The spread reflects the part spec, not markup games.
Every replacement includes the capacitor itself, removing and safely discharging the old one, installing and torquing the new one, checking the compressor and fan amp draw after startup, and verifying the system reaches proper temperature differential. We test the new capacitor under load, not just with a bench meter, because a capacitor that reads fine on a multimeter can still fail under operating voltage. The price is written before we begin, and the repair is guaranteed in writing for a full year through our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it fails in that time, we return at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
A capacitor holds a charge even after power is disconnected, and a charged capacitor can deliver a shock strong enough to stop your heart. This is the one component inside a condenser that I tell homeowners to leave alone. You can safely check your breakers, verify the thermostat is calling for cooling, and confirm the outside unit has power. Beyond that, the electrical hazard is real and the diagnostic mistakes are expensive.
The other reason to call: a weak capacitor and a failing compressor can present nearly identical symptoms. If we replace the capacitor and the compressor is actually the problem, you’ve bought yourself a part you didn’t need. We test the full circuit before we quote anything. Call (626) 657-5344 and Marco Benitez or one of our techs will diagnose it on-site, with the price in writing before work starts.
FAQs
A Lennox capacitor in Pasadena typically lasts 5 to 10 years, but our summer heat waves shorten that toward the lower end. Capacitors degrade faster in sustained high temperatures, and a unit sitting on a west-facing wall in direct August sun will cook a capacitor noticeably faster than one shaded by a eucalyptus.
No. A capacitor is a sealed component and the failure is internal, so rebuilding one isn’t possible or cost-effective. The fix is a replacement, and a quality aftermarket unit from AmRad or Genteq typically outperforms the original. Call (626) 657-5344 for an exact quote. Estimates are free.
A straightforward Lennox capacitor swap takes 30 to 60 minutes on-site, including discharging the old part, installing the new one, and testing the system under load. If we find additional issues during the diagnostic, we’ll show you what we found and quote the full repair in writing before doing more work.
We stock the most common Lennox capacitor ratings in dual-run and single-run configurations, including 370 and 440 volt units, and we carry parts for Carrier and Trane systems as well. For less common specs we can usually source the exact match by the next business day.
