HVAC Before & After in Pasadena, CA

Photos tell the truth faster than any estimate sheet. The jobs below show what we walked into, what we changed, and why it holds up. Most of these projects took one day or less. Every one of them came with a written price before we touched a single component, and a written guarantee when we left. If a repair in these photos failed within a year, we’d have gone back free. None did.

Garage-Mounted Furnace in San Rafael Hills: Combustion Air and Venting Correction

BeforeBeforeAfterAfter
Placeholder: garage furnace before and after – San Rafael Hills, Pasadena. Drop before photo left, after photo right.

The old furnace sat against a finished garage wall, pulling combustion air from a room that had been sealed up during a remodel. That’s a CO risk, and it’s exactly the sort of thing a quick visual check on a service call catches. We ran an intake to the exterior and corrected the vent slope. The flame burns cleanly now, and the furnace stops short-cycling on cool nights.

Heat Pump Conversion in Chapman Woods: Ducted Gas Furnace to Variable-Speed Heat Pump

BeforeBeforeAfterAfter
Placeholder: outdoor unit before (bare pad, old AC only) and after (new heat pump on risers) – Chapman Woods, Pasadena.

This house had a working gas furnace but no cooling. That’s unusual in Pasadena, where August afternoons routinely hit the mid-90s anyway. We removed the old AC condenser and installed a variable-speed heat pump paired with the existing ducts. The after photo shows the unit lifted off the pad on risers so debris doesn’t pile against the coil. Wiring is in sealed conduit, not zip-tied to the lineset.

Attic Furnace Replacement Near Victory Park: 28-Year-Old Unit, Asbestos-Taped Ducts

BeforeBeforeAfterAfter
Placeholder: attic platform before (rusted cabinet, disconnected flex duct) and after (new horizontal furnace, mastic-sealed plenum) – Victory Park area, Pasadena.

What looked like a simple furnace swap turned into duct repair once we found the old tape peeling. The before photo shows a unit installed decades before any current efficiency rules, with a rusted cabinet and a disconnected return. We replaced the furnace, rehung the platform, and sealed every accessible seam with mastic. The difference in register airflow was measurable, and that’s the part that surprised us on the return visit. It shouldn’t have, but seeing it on a manometer made it real.

Rooftop Package Unit on a Commercial Conversion in Northwest Pasadena

Placeholder: curb and old package unit before (deteriorated gaskets, exposed wiring) and after (new unit, new curb adapter, weather-tight disconnect) – Northwest Pasadena.

Rooftop units in Pasadena get hammered by sun and the occasional Santa Ana dust storm. This one had dried-out curb gaskets letting conditioned air escape before it ever hit the ducts. The after shows a properly seated curb adapter with new gaskets and a weather-proofed electrical disconnect. These photos don’t capture the sound difference inside, but the tenant noticed within a day.

AC Condenser Repair in Bungalow Heaven: Failed Capacitor and Overheated Wiring

Two technicians installing an outdoor central air conditioning unit
Placeholder: condenser electrical panel before (swollen capacitor, scorched wire insulation) and after (new capacitor, trimmed and re-terminated wires) – Bungalow Heaven, Pasadena.

This is the repair we photograph most, because a swollen capacitor is what failure looks like before the system quits entirely. The before photo shows a capacitor bulging at the top and a terminal with melted insulation from loose contact. The fix was under an hour. Same-day calls like this are common in July, and the written guarantee on the repair means if the capacitor failed again inside a year, we’d eat the cost of the part and the trip.

Furnace Flue Correction in Linda Vista: Condensation Backing Into the Heat Exchanger

HVAC technician performing professional air conditioning repair and maintenance service
Placeholder: flue pipe before (negative slope, visible water staining) and after (re-pitched metal flue with correct condensate drainage) – Linda Vista, Pasadena.

Flue slope errors are quiet problems. They don’t trip the thermostat or throw an error code right away. But a flue pitched wrong lets acidic condensation sit against the heat exchanger, and that shortens a furnace’s life by years. We re-pitched the venting, added a proper condensate tee, and fired the furnace for a full cycle before leaving. That’s the Garrison Standard on a repair call: price in writing, work by the book, leave the site clean.
